Are Freelancers & Corporates The Same Target Market?

The answer is obvious isn’t it? Isn’t it?
So why do so many solopreneurs running their own small businesses address both in their marketing materials? For example: “Whether you’re a small business or corporation blah blah blah”. WHY?

So why do so many solopreneurs running their own small businesses address both in their marketing materials? For example: “Whether you’re a small business or corporation blah blah blah”. WHY?

I’ll tell you why…they’re scared to define their target markets too tightly and exclude potential customers (especially those who they hope will be the cash cows – the big corporates).

I know because we did this too for a while! Until we realised that it was not worth even trying.

Having both worked in the corporate world and had corporate clients for our small business, Jonathan and I both know that the process of marketing to and working with a bigger, corporate company is vastly different from working with a solopreneur or small business owner.

My advice having been there & done that? Don’t do it, focus on a tighter target market and you’ll find customers and clients so much easier to attract.

In case you didn’t know what we do professionally (and seriously, quite a few people don’t – including many of our friends & family!!!), we run our own business, Kinetiva – a professional services company.

What this means is that we provide a “one stop shop” of web design & development plus marketing consulting, graphic design and technology support services for solopreneurs and micro-businesses in the health & wellness and consulting/professional services industries (quite a mouthful – no wonder we’re changing it!).

But, that’s all about to change…

Jonathan and I have been hard at work trying to figure out what’s wrong with our business. Not that anything is actually “wrong” – we’ve seen no decline in clients or projects since the recession and business is actually pretty good… Read the rest of this entry
